Obtaining an Order of Protection
If you have been harmed or threatened by your spouse and are concerned for the safety and well-being of your children, you can ask the court to issue an order of protection. This will prevent your abuser from contacting you or your children or from coming to your home or your place of work. When you file an order of protection, you will be required to attend a hearing where a temporary restraining order will be issued.
If you wish to obtain a permanent order of protection, which can provide you with relief for up to two years, you must attend a second hearing. The other person may be at this hearing to defend against the charges.
